The Enduring Legacy of Code Geass

The Code Geass series is a hugely popular franchise that began with the TV anime Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch, which aired in 2006. The story is set in Japan, now known as Area 11 and under the dominion of the Britannia Empire, where protagonist Lelouch, having gained the absolute power of “Geass,” embarks on a quest for revenge against the Empire.

Its sequel, Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2, expanded to national broadcast and aired from April to September 2008. Its shocking conclusion garnered a massive reaction and is still a topic of discussion among fans today. Since then, the franchise has seen a diverse media mix, including the theatrical anime Code Geass: Boukoku no Akito (also known as Code Geass: Akito the Exiled) and original comic series like Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya (which can be translated as Code Geass: Renya of the Jet Black Lotus) and Code Geass: Soubou no Oz (which can be translated as Code Geass: Oz of the Two Faces), as well as musicals, orchestral concerts, exhibitions, games, and figures.

From October 21, 2017, a theatrical trilogy re-editing the TV series was released sequentially.
