As 2025 draws to a close and the year-end festivities approach, many of us find ourselves already pondering our New Year’s plans and aspirations.
One of the most cherished traditions of the New Year in Japan is Hatsumoude, the first shrine or temple visit of the year. It’s a special time where people journey to sacred grounds to pray for a year of peace and happiness, or perhaps test their luck with an omikuji fortune slip. These moments truly encapsulate the unique joy of Oshoogatsu.

Imagine spending such a heartwarming Hatsumoude with your beloved oshi – even the crisp winter air might feel a little magical and special, don’t you think? That’s why Anime! Anime! is thrilled to launch a new reader survey: “Which Character Do You Want to Go to Hatsumoude With?” This is your chance to tell us your dream Hatsumoude companion! In a free-response format, please tell us the character and their series name that comes to mind, for both male and female categories.
