Tracing Steel Ball Run’s Manga Roots

Before becoming an anime, **Steel Ball Run** began its life as a manga penned by the legendary Hirohiko Araki. It first appeared in Weekly Shounen Jump in January 2004. Interestingly, at its debut, it was presented as a story separate from the main JoJo continuity. However, upon its transfer to Ultra Jump in April 2005, it was officially recognized as the seventh part of the series, set within an exciting alternate timeline. The manga was originally collected into 24 volumes between May 2004 and June 2011, and later recompiled into a more condensed 16-volume edition released from February 2017 to January 2018 by Shueisha.

The Bizarre Manga Legacy Continues

Hirohiko Araki kicked off the entire action-adventure series back in 1986 with the first part, **Phantom Blood**, serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump. Parts two through six—**Sentou Chouryuu** (also known as **Battle Tendency**), **Stardust Crusaders**, **Diamond wa Kudakenai** (also known as **Diamond Is Unbreakable**), **Ougon no Kaze** (also known as **Golden Wind**), and **Stone Ocean**—followed, running in the same magazine between 1987 and 2003.

The eighth part, **JoJolion**, had a long ten-year run in Ultra Jump, concluding in August 2021. Shueisha released its 27th and final volume the following month in September 2021.

Currently, the ninth part of the manga series, **The JoJoLands**, debuted in Ultra Jump in February 2023. As of December 2024, the fifth volume has been released by Shueisha.

Anime’s Historical Bizarre Adventures

David Production has been the studio behind adapting the first six parts of **JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken** into anime. The most recent adaptation was **Stone Ocean**, which was streamed in three installments on Netflix, releasing in December 2021, September 2022, and December 2022. For physical media collectors in the West, VIZ Media released the **Stone Ocean** anime on two Blu-ray volumes in January and September 2024.

Steel Ball Run Rides Westward in Print

Fans looking to catch up on the manga story in English can find it thanks to VIZ Media. The first volume of the **Steel Ball Run** manga was published on May 27, with the second volume slated for release on July 22.
