September 8th is Mascara Day. This day was established by a cosmetics company, playing on the words “kukkuri” (9) and “patchiri” (8), which evoke clear, sparkling eyes. Mascara, which enhances the eyes, is an indispensable item in makeup routines.

For anime characters, eyes are a crucial element in defining their overall impression. The design of characters’ eyes often showcases unique individuality, whether it’s through distinctive pupil colors and sparkle, extraordinarily long eyelashes, or even eyes linked to special abilities. Many readers can probably recognize a character immediately just by looking at their eyes, highlighting their importance!

Following last year’s success, Anime! Anime! once again conducted a reader poll titled “Who are the characters with the most impressive eyes?”. We received 505 responses during the survey period from August 22nd to August 28th. The gender ratio was approximately 30% male and 70% female, indicating a higher participation from women. The age demographic primarily consisted of younger individuals, with around 60% being 19 years old or younger and about 15% in their 20s.

Eyes That Drive the Story! Key Characters Dominate the Rankings

Claiming the top spot for the third consecutive year is Gojou Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen, garnering approximately 16% of the votes.

Gojou Satoru is a jujutsu sorcerer who possesses the special eyes known as Six Eyes. Readers couldn’t help but rave about his gaze, with comments like: “That special feeling when his eyes, usually hidden by an eye mask, are finally revealed is just irresistible! His aquamarine-like eyes are so beautiful, I paused the video to examine every detail when they were first shown.” Another fan expressed, “His eyes aren’t just blue; they’re the kind of ‘ao’ (azure/pale blue) that makes you want to use that specific kanji. I also love the way he casually pulls off his blindfold to show his eyes.” Many also speculated, “I even think the chorus of the second season’s OP theme, ‘Ao no Sumika’ (Blue’s Dwelling), refers to his eyes.” These comments highlight the overwhelming admiration for the captivating beauty of his clear, striking eyes.

Furthermore, the special edition, Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen: Shibuya Jihen Tokubetsu Henshuuban, combined with an advance screening of Shime Kanyuu Senkou Jouei, is slated for release on November 7th. Fans can also look forward to the broadcast of the TV anime’s third season, Shime Kanyuu Zenpen, starting in January 2026.

In second place is Hoshino Ai from Oshi no Ko, maintaining her position for the third consecutive year with approximately 9% of the votes.

Hoshino Ai is a legendary idol known for the distinctive star marks in both of her eyes. Fans remarked, “When you think of Ai, you think of those eyes! They’re naturally captivating and draw you in.” Another comment highlighted, “The stars in her eyes are a symbol of a true star. While her daughter Ruby and son Aqua also have stars, Ai’s having them in both eyes truly exudes charisma.” It was also noted that “Even if someone hasn’t watched Oshi no Ko, it’s highly likely they remember Ai’s eyes,” emphasizing how her eyes have transcended her as a single character to become an iconic symbol of the series itself.

Furthermore, the third season of the TV anime Oshi no Ko is slated to air in 2026.

Securing third place is Douma from Kimetsu no Yaiba. His support rating of approximately 4% marks a significant leap from his 17th position last year.

Douma is a member of the Twelve Kizuki, serving under Kibutsuji Muzan, and holds the rank of Upper Rank Two. Fans commented, “While all the Twelve Kizuki have numbers carved into their eyes, making them all distinctive, Douma’s rainbow-colored eyes truly stand out.” Another added, “His beautiful rainbow eyes are his trademark. They’re so iconic that aurora pouches inspired by his eyes have even been released!” His exceptionally vibrant eyes were particularly praised among the demons.

Interestingly, Kokushibou, Upper Rank One, and Akaza, Upper Rank Three, also ranked tied at 13th place. Furthermore, Iguro Obanai, the Serpent Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, secured a tie at 8th place. This goes to show that Kimetsu no Yaiba is truly filled with characters who boast strikingly impressive eyes.

Other Noteworthy Comments!

Narumi Gen from Kaijuu 8-gou received praise: “He usually wears his hair down, but when he pulls it back during combat, revealing his eyes, it’s incredibly cool! He has a weapon called ‘Retina’ transplanted into his eyes, and those cross-shaped eyes are truly intense!!”

Almond Eye from Uma Musume Pretty Derby was noted for: “Her name comes from the beautiful almond shape of her eyes. Among all the Uma Musume, her eyes sparkle with a unique brilliance, leaving an unforgettable impact the moment you see them. I truly hope she appears in the anime!”

Usami-chan from Gag Manga Biyori was described as: “A detective who dramatically widens her eyes when inspiration strikes. Because of this, she’s often told, ‘Your eyes are scary!’ It’s quite impressive how, despite having a cute rabbit motif, she can create such a shocking expression with just her eyes.”

Yamato Kansuke from Meitantei Conan received votes as well: “He’s the main character whose single eye became the origin of the title for the movie Gekijouban Meitantei Conan: Sekigan no Flashback (Detective Conan Movie: The One-Eyed Flashback). I became a fan watching him continue to pursue cases even after sustaining injuries during an investigation.” This character, who played an active role in this year’s movie, also garnered votes.

This poll clearly shows that many characters who hold immense power or are crucial key players in their stories, essential to moving the plot forward, have ranked highly.
