Anime Adaptation Officially Greenlit!
Great news for fantasy drama fans! Publishing company TO Books has just announced that an anime project is in the works for the popular light novel series, Koishita Hito wa, Imouto no Kawari ni Shindekure to Itta. Imouto to Kekkon shita Kataomoi Aite ga Naze Imasara Watashi no Moto ni? To Omottara. You might also know it by its English title, The Person I Loved Asked Me to Die in My Sister’s Stead. This is a huge step for the series, which has already captivated readers with its emotional and mysterious storyline.
Diving Into the Light Novel’s Journey
The original story was penned by Nagano Mizuki, who first shared it on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website from November 2020 to September 2022. After its online run, TO Books picked it up and began publishing the physical volumes in September 2021. The books are beautifully illustrated by Toyota Saori, who you might recognize from works like Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu.
The light novel has been a massive hit, with its seventh volume released in May 2025 and the eighth volume hitting stores on January 10. Impressively, the series has achieved a cumulative circulation of 1.1 million copies, including digital editions, proving its widespread appeal.
The Manga Adaptation’s Path
For those who love visual storytelling, a manga adaptation has been running since April 2022. It was initially drawn by Yamori Maki on the Comic CMOA website before moving to the Corona EX site two months later. TO Books has released five volumes so far, with the sixth volume also scheduled for January 10, aligning with the light novel’s release.
English-speaking fans aren’t left out! Tokyopop licensed the manga in March 2024 and has already published the fourth volume as of August 5 last year. You can also check out the English chapters on the Corona EX website.
What’s the Story About?
At its heart, this is a tale of love, sacrifice, and unexpected twists. Lady Wisteria’s deepest desire is to be worthy of Lord Bright, the man she loves. But her world shatters when her younger sister, Rosalie, is chosen to become the guardian of the Predawn Realm—a one-way trip from which there’s no return. In a heartbreaking turn, Lord Bright pleads with Wisteria to take her sister’s place, arguing that her magical prowess and resistance to the realm’s sinister miasma make her the better candidate.
Devastated but compliant, Wisteria enters the Predawn Realm, accompanied only by the sacred sword, Sartis. More than two decades later, a stranger with a hauntingly familiar face suddenly appears. He demands the sword and challenges Wisteria, leaving her to wonder: who is he, and why does he look so much like Lord Bright? The mystery deepens from there!
