A Quick Dive into the World of Jujutsu Kaisen
For those who might be new to the phenomenon, Jujutsu Kaisen is a dark fantasy manga by Akutami Gege that depicts the battle between curses, born from human negative emotions, and the jujutsu sorcerers who exorcise them. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump from March 2018 to September 2024, and the comic series has sold over 150 million copies in total, including digital versions. A near-future spin-off, Jujutsu Kaisen ≡ (Modulo), with art by Iwasaki Yuuji based on Akutami’s original story, began a short-term concentrated serialization in September 2025.
The anime adaptation first aired from October 2020 to March 2021 (Season 1), and the first film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, was a massive worldwide hit, grossing 26.5 billion yen globally. TV anime Season 2, “Katsuyu・Gyokusetsu / Shibuya Jihen” (often referred to as the “Shibuya Incident” arc), aired from July to December 2023 and caused a huge stir not just in Japan but across the world.
2025 saw the release of the film compilation Jujutsu Kaisen Katsuyu・Gyokusetsu and the revival screening of Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Additionally, November 2025 brought the theatrical release of Jujutsu Kaisen “Shibuya Jihen Tokubetsu Henshūban” × “Shimetsu Kaiyū Senkō Jōei”, which featured the “Shibuya Incident Special Edit” plus the world premiere of Episodes 1 and 2 from Season 3 “Shimetsu Kaiyū Zenpen”. The TV broadcast for “Shimetsu Kaiyū Zenpen” began on January 8th, diving into the deadly battle royale known as the “Deadly Gambit” orchestrated by the worst sorcerer in history, Kamo Noritoshi.
