Voice Actress Yamazaki Wakana Takes a Hiatus, Okamura Akemi to Temporarily Voice Mouri Ran
In significant news for anime fans, it has been announced that voice actress Yamazaki Wakana, renowned for her role as Mouri Ran in the long-running anime Meitantei Conan (also known as Case Closed), will be taking a temporary hiatus from her activities due to health reasons. The news has prompted an outpouring of support from her colleagues in the industry.
On February 16, 2026, her agency, Aoni Production, made the official announcement regarding her health-related break. Following this, the official Meitantei Conan team also released a statement titled “Notice Concerning Yamazaki Wakana, the Voice of Mouri Ran.”
The statement, issued in the name of the “TV and Film Anime Production Staff,” expressed their primary concern for Yamazaki-san’s well-being: “The entire production staff, first and foremost, is thinking of Yamazaki-san’s health, who has supported this series for many years, and we sincerely wish for her recovery.” It was also confirmed that for the duration of her recovery, the role of Mouri Ran would be taken over by fellow voice actress Okamura Akemi.
Messages of Support from Fellow Cast Members
The announcement led to immediate messages of care and encouragement from Yamazaki Wakana’s co-stars on Meitantei Conan.
Hidaka Noriko, who voices Sera Masumi in the series, posted a touching message. She wrote, “Wakana-chan, please rest well,” adding a unique connection: “Hearing that Okamura Akemi-chan is the substitute warmed my heart. Nami and Nojiko help each other to live! We’ll be waiting for you to come back healthy, Ran-kun!” This comment references the trio’s roles in ONE PIECE, where Hidaka Noriko voices Bell-mère (Nami’s foster mother), Okamura Akemi is Nami, and Yamazaki Wakana is Nojiko (Nami’s adoptive sister).

A Poetic Role Reversal
The choice of substitute voice actress, Okamura Akemi, adds a layer of poignant history to the situation. Okamura Akemi is famously the voice of Nami in ONE PIECE. Back in 2001, she took a temporary break from her activities due to maternity leave.
During that time, who stepped in to voice Nami for episodes 70 through 78 of the ONE PIECE anime? None other than Yamazaki Wakana.
This full-circle moment has not been lost on fans. On social media, reactions highlighted this beautiful symmetry, with comments like:
“The fact that Okamura-san is taking on Ran’s role this time, I can only feel gratitude.”
“I’m perfectly satisfied with Okamura Akemi as Ran-neechan’s substitute.”
“When Okamura Akemi-san temporarily stopped her activities before, wasn’t it Yamazaki Wakana-san who was the substitute for Nami in ONE PIECE? Now it’s the reverse.”
The anime community now collectively wishes Yamazaki Wakana a speedy and full recovery, while also expressing confidence in Okamura Akemi’s ability to seamlessly step into the role of the beloved Ran in the meantime.
