A Story That Still Takes Flight After All These Years

Based on the beloved children’s book by Kadono Eiko, Majo no Takkyuubin was directed by the legendary Miyazaki Hayao (note: the kanji for “Saki” in his name uses the “tatsusaki” character). It tells the story of Kiki, a 13-year-old girl who inherits the blood of a witch. Following tradition, she leaves home with her faithful black cat companion Jiji to live in a strange new town and train to become a full-fledged witch.

Her new life is filled with excitement, but things don’t always go as planned. Through encounters with various people—both kind and quirky—Kiki learns to grow, to believe in herself, and to find her own place in the world. The film delicately weaves the subtle emotions of a young girl on the cusp of adolescence, making it a timeless coming-of-age story.

Why This 4K Remaster Is a Must-See – Especially on IMAX

One of the biggest draws of the film has always been Miyazaki’s dynamic, breathtaking animation. From Kiki flying through the sky on her broom to the gorgeous, European-inspired townscapes, every frame is a work of art. Now, with the 4K digital remaster, every detail is sharper and more vivid than ever before.

Kiki’s expressive face, Jiji’s adorable movements, the cobblestone streets, the moonlit flights—everything stands out with remarkable clarity. And when projected on an IMAX screen, the high-definition visuals and crystal-clear sound create an immersive experience that makes you feel like you’ve stepped right into the story. It’s almost like discovering the film for the very first time.

Two New Key Visuals for the IMAX Release

Alongside the announcement, two brand-new poster visuals were unveiled for the IMAX run. Both are based on original image boards drawn during the film’s production:

  • One visual shows Kiki’s back as she looks down over the town on a full-moon night—the night she sets out on her journey. It has a mysterious, almost dreamlike quality.
  • The other captures Kiki’s innocent, slightly awkward expression—a mixture of curiosity and worry that she can barely hide. It’s adorable and achingly real.

Both posters perfectly capture the essence of the film’s world—warm, wistful, and full of magic.
