The manga Jiimoto Saikou! (Local is the Best!), known for its cute art style juxtaposed with a grim, almost absurdly unfortunate setting, has officially been greenlit for an anime adaptation. The series, created by usagi, has been generating buzz on social media for its unique premise. The adaptation will be produced by MAPPA (famous for Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan: The Final Season) and will stream worldwide exclusively on Netflix.
The story follows a group of girls who have never left their hometown. No matter how much misfortune befalls them, they steadfastly declare, “Local is the best!” (Jiimoto Saikou!).

Alongside the announcement, a teaser visual and a teaser promotional video were released. The visual depicts the protagonist Chanel-chan surrounded by good friends and senpai in their wonderful hometown. The PV is set to the song “milk” by aiko, a singer-songwriter who is also a huge fan of the original manga.

Comments from the Creator and aiko
usagi (Original Creator)

“I am so grateful that the manga I casually serialized has been turned into an anime! During the serialization, when I went bankrupt, the editor in charge lent me one million yen out of pocket. Thanks to the support of everyone around me in tough times, I was able to continue. Thank you! At first, my goal was just to make a living, but now I draw the manga with a certain hope in mind. I don’t know what the future holds, but I want to finish ‘Jiimoto Saikou!’ under that hope! Thank you to everyone who has read even a little bit! I am really looking forward to the anime!”

“I am so happy that ‘Jiimoto Saikou!’ is getting an anime adaptation! When usagi-sensei came to see my live performance, they told me afterward that they saw the scenery of a certain song and thought, ‘This is just like Jiimoto Saikou!’ That has been a great encouragement to me. When I saw the teaser video, I was excited to see all sorts of things from the manga world. And the inclusion of ‘milk’ moved me tremendously! Thank you!”
