The highly anticipated exhibition “Hosoda Mamoru no Kiten/Ten” opened on June 20, 2026 (Saturday) at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO in Tokyo’s Kyobashi district. The day before, on June 19 (Friday), an opening event was held featuring director Hosoda Mamoru and actor Someya Shouta, who has appeared in four of Hosoda’s films. The two spoke about their personal “origins” and the significance of the exhibition.

Centering on the beloved works Toki o Kakeru Shoujo, Summer Wars, and Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki, the exhibition presents an unprecedented collection of production materials including storyboards, layouts, original drawings, and background art. It offers visitors a chance to rediscover the director’s creative roots and relive the emotional impact of those summer classics from a fresh perspective.

In addition to the main displays, the venue features a shop selling over 100 exclusive exhibition goods and a themed cafe called “OZ Cafe” inspired by the world of Summer Wars, allowing fans to fully immerse themselves in Hosoda’s cinematic universe.
During the opening event, Someya Shouta—who has worked with Hosoda on Bakemono no Ko, Mirai no Mirai, Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime, and Hateshinaki Scarlet—shared his experiences on set. He described the director’s nurturing approach and how the films take on new meanings when viewed at different stages of life.

Comments from the Stage
Hosoda Mamoru (Director)
“I’ve been making works without ever looking back, but this exhibition gave me the first chance to reflect on my origins. I remembered the feelings from back then—when I didn’t know what the future held, but I just wanted to create something good and deliver it to everyone. I’m very embarrassed to show the self-made animation I made in middle school, but because the theme is ‘origins,’ I wanted to share it. I hope visitors can enjoy the exhibition in their own way while recalling their own younger days.”
Someya Shouta (Actor)
“The time I spent being directed by Hosoda-san was truly a happy time for me as an actor. He always faced me with a warm embrace, and I feel like he nurtured me through the process of making his works. His films leave a different impression when you watch them as a child and then again as an adult with children of your own. They depict changes in people and the passage of time, which makes them enjoyable across generations. This exhibition also lets you touch the director’s creative origins, so I hope many people will come and enjoy it.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Toki o Kakeru Shoujo, a milestone that Hosoda reflected on as the starting point of his filmmaking career.
