The anime that ignited a Go boom in the Heisei era is coming back to screens. Hikaru no Go will be available for free on ABEMA, with all 75 episodes airing in a special marathon from August 13 to August 18, 2026.
About Hikaru no Go
Based on the manga written by Hotta Yumi and illustrated by Obata Takeshi, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump, Hikaru no Go is a massive hit that introduced the game of Go to a wide audience. The story follows Shindou Hikaru, a grade schooler who is possessed by the spirit of Fujiwara no Sai, a genius Go player from the Heian period. Through Sai’s passion for the game and encounters with young elite player Touya Akira, Hikaru gradually awakens his own Go talent.
Despite Go being a subject unfamiliar to many at the time, the series won over fans with its dynamic storytelling and compelling characters, attracting not only manga readers but also children and adults alike. The TV anime aired from October 2001 to March 2003, totaling 75 episodes.
ABEMA Broadcast Details
Now, for the first time on ABEMA, all 75 episodes will be broadcast for free. The marathon runs from August 13 (Thursday) to August 18 (Tuesday). After each broadcast, episodes will be available to watch for free for one week.
