In time for Disaster Preparedness Day on September 1, Gakken Mook has released My Melody & Kuromi no Omamori Furoshiki: “Moshimo no Toki ni Jibun wo Mamoru Bousai BOOK”-tsuki. The special mook is now available at bookstores and online retailers nationwide.
This mook combines a My Melody & Kuromi omamori furoshiki with a disaster prevention book titled Moshimo no Toki ni Jibun wo Mamoru Bousai BOOK. Because disasters can strike at any time, the content emphasizes the importance of preparing with the mindset that “a disaster might happen tomorrow.”
The furoshiki features My Melody and Kuromi designs in muted pastel colors, measuring 100×100 cm. It is also water-repellent, making it handy for sudden rain.
In everyday life, it can be used as a rain cover, sunshade, backpack cover, eco bag, sacoche, picnic sheet, or folded umbrella cover. In disaster situations, it can serve as a protective hood, mask, water carrier, triangular bandage, changing or nursing cape, simple partition, or even a shower curtain.
The accompanying book introduces 15 everyday uses and 15 disaster-related uses, for a total of 30 ways to utilize the furoshiki. It is lightweight and folds down to the size of a handkerchief, so it can be kept in a regular bag.
The Moshimo no Toki ni Jibun wo Mamoru Bousai BOOK also covers the characteristics of natural disasters common in Japan, how to assemble an emergency kit, home safety measures, and ten key actions to protect life during a disaster. All kanji include furigana, making it accessible for both adults and young children.
The book is supervised by Takani Tomoya, a preparedness and disaster prevention advisor who gives lectures across Japan and shares easy-to-understand disaster prevention information through books, newspapers, TV, radio, and YouTube. Additionally, part of the cover can be cut off with scissors to create a “Moshimo no Toki no Bousai MEMO Board.” It can be written on with whiteboard markers and wiped clean, making it useful for noting evacuation and support information during a disaster.
