The summer anime Yani Neko aired its ninth episode, “Nyaa’s Little Sister Is Popular,” on August 3, 2026, at 24:30. The series, known for pushing boundaries, delivered what many are calling its most extreme episode yet, prompting reactions like “How did this even air?” and “This is the worst (in a good way) I’ve ever seen.”

Before the broadcast, the landlord (voiced by Inada Tetsu) posted on X: “After last week’s special program, this week will air as usual. But I think this episode is the most dangerous yet, so I hope nothing happens after it airs.”
A Gift That Shocked Everyone
In the episode, classmate Oji Ruko, a beast-fetishist, becomes interested in Nyaa’s little sister, Imoko. After learning that Imoko is a sister-complex, Ruko decides to give her a gift. However, the gift turns out to be a stool sample kit, leaving viewers stunned. Reactions included “A stool sample present?!” and “This is too much, I can’t stop laughing.”

Ruko is voiced by Fairouz Ai, who also plays a cat-type beast girl in Mushoku Tensei, leading to comments like “Fairouz Ai is here too?” and “Mushoku Tensei and Yani Neko are connected.”
A Case of Mistaken Identity
Meanwhile, Nyaa is in the toilet, smoking and trying to poop. When she runs out of cigarettes, she goes to get a new pack without pulling up her pants. On the way, the landlord arrives with a circular notice and sees her, exclaiming, “A cat demon?!” The misunderstanding that Nyaa is a cat demon (nekomata) had viewers laughing: “Cat demon?!” “I can’t believe he mistook that for a tail.”

Kansai Neko Sings
Kansai Neko, a college student cat who speaks Kansai dialect, tries to tell a joke about Matsuo Basho, but no one reacts. He then runs out and starts singing the opening theme “Nan mo Nee” while heading to Nyaa’s room. He sings “Yani Neko aru aru” and ends with “Yani Neko is surprisingly not smelly,” only to find Imoko in front of him. Viewers praised his singing: “Kansai can sing!” and “How did they let him sing those lyrics?”

The Common Sense Rewriting App
Nyaa’s junior, Yaku Neko, and Kansai Neko go shopping to buy Nyaa some clothes. They also use a “common sense rewriting app” found online to hypnotize Nyaa into not wanting to smoke. The app works, but Nyaa still has a desire to put things in her mouth. She then goes to the apartment of manga artist Ochipopo Tatsurou (real name: Tatsuno Saori) and spits on him and his manuscript, leading to a police search for a woman spitting at a smoking area.
Yuri Moments and Pachinko-Style Smoking
The episode also featured a heartwarming scene between Imoko and the writer cat, with fans noting the “yuri” development: “This is a peaceful time without the smell of smoke.” Additionally, Nyaa’s mother, Shizue, was shown smoking excessively in a pachinko-like sequence, prompting comments like “This is too stupid, I love it” and “CR Yani Neko might actually happen.”

Post-Broadcast Reactions
After the episode aired, the landlord’s voice actor Inada Tetsu tweeted, “I’m glad it aired safely! Now, which part did I think was the most dangerous? I won’t say.” Yaku Neko’s voice actor Matsuoka Misato called it “a very good crap episode.” Kansai Neko’s voice actor Shimizu Ayaka mentioned that she sang the “Yani Neko aru aru” song five times during recording. Director Kimura Taku revealed that the eye-catch voice was by Gunpii from the comedy duo Haru to Hikouki.
Viewers expressed concern: “This episode was really dirty, but it aired safely.” Others praised the adaptation: “The way they connected the original’s dirty stories is amazing.”
Yani Neko airs every Thursday at 24:30 on TOKYO MX, BS11, and AT-X, with streaming on Netflix and other platforms starting at 25:00.
