About the Mysterious World of xxxHOLiC
xxxHOLiC is a dark fantasy manga created by the legendary artist collective CLAMP, which began serialization in 2003 in Young Magazine issue 13. The story begins with the encounter between the lonely high school student Watanuki Kimihiro, who can see ayakashi (monsters) that cling to the darkness in people’s hearts, and the mysterious shop mistress Ichihara Yuuko, who grants the wishes of her visitors at her enigmatic shop, known simply as “The Shop.” The series gained additional fame for its innovative narrative technique, as its story progresses while being linked with another CLAMP work, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-. The series was renamed xxxHOLiC Rou in 2009 and concluded in 2011, but it resumed publication in 2013 as xxxHOLiC Rei.
Production I.G’s TV anime adaptation saw a first season of 24 episodes and a second season of 13 episodes. The franchise also includes the film xxxHOLiC: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as the two-part OVA xxxHOLiC Shunmuki, which was bundled with the limited editions of manga volumes 14 and 15. Furthermore, the series was adapted into a TV drama on WOWOW in 2013, and a live-action film directed by Ninagawa Mika was released in 2022.
