What is Chiikawa?

The story follows the daily lives of Chiikawa and friends, blending moments of fun, heartache, and a little hardship, which has resonated with a massive audience from kids to adults. Its X follower count has soared past 4.58 million, and it has swept top honors, winning the Grand Prize at the Japan Character Awards in 2022, 2024, and most recently in 2025.
The anime adaptation airs within Fuji TV’s “Mezamashi TV” program every Tuesday and Friday. If you miss an episode, you can catch up via limited one-week streaming on YouTube, TVer, and FOD. The excitement doesn’t stop there – the first Chiikawa movie, titled Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (which can be translated as “Movie Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island”), is scheduled for release in summer 2026!
