First broadcast in 1982, Mahou no Princess Minky Momo captivated fans with its innovative scripts and high-quality animation, breaking the mold of magical girl anime and establishing itself as a fantasy series enjoyable for adults. It spearheaded the magical girl boom of the era, and a new series, Mahou no Princess Minky Momo: Yume wo Dakishimete, aired in 1991. Subsequent OVAs have kept the franchise alive across generations.
The upcoming OVA is helmed by director Watanabe Ayumu, with character designs by Watanabe Hiroshi and Tominaga Mari, and a script by Akao Dekao. The story follows the land of dreams, Dejinasā, which is sustained by dream energy. As humans lose their dreams and hope, the dream energy wanes, putting the kingdom at risk of extinction. The king sends three companions—Chamo-cha, Dettabukku, and Pipiru-pi—to seek help from Minky Momo. On her 12th birthday, a girl named Momo gets a smartphone and, after meeting the trio, awakens as Minky Momo, resolving to save Dejinasā. While she collects dream energy, a mysterious app spreads among children, promoting shallow dreams driven by validation and metrics, prompting Momo to question what people truly dream of.

Former series general director Yuyama Kunihiko contributed an illustration alongside a comment: “Minky Momo appears when you least expect her… just when everyone’s dreams and hope are about to fade.” The message reflects the enduring legacy of the character and builds anticipation for the new work.
A fan participation campaign has also launched on social media. By following the official X (formerly Twitter) account and posting fan art with the hashtag #ミンキーモモ_FA企画, fans can submit their work via a provided link. Director Watanabe and the production team will select a few entries to be featured in the theater pamphlet. The submission period runs from May 30 to June 24, 2026.
Mahou no Princess Minky Momo: Akogare no Yume e – Magokoro no Duo opens at Shinjuku Wald 9 and other theaters in Tokyo on November 13, 2026. Further details are expected in the coming months.
