Secret SNS Love Exposed: Yuri Manga ‘Kyou wa Kanojo ga Inai kara’ Explores Romance in the Social Media Age

The editorial team at Anime! Anime! presents a new installment of our recommended manga series, highlighting works that have not yet been adapted into anime but deserve attention. Today, we shine a spotlight on “Kyou wa Kanojo ga Inai kara” (Because I Don’t Have a Girlfriend Today), a yuri manga serialized in Comic Yuri Hime.

Nanase and Yuni are in a secret relationship. While Yuni understands Nanase’s busy volleyball schedule, the loneliness of after-school hours drives her to post on a secret SNS account — a “ura-aka.” There, she shares selfies, complaints, and small confessions. But when classmate Fuuko discovers the account, the fragile balance shatters. Fuuko comforts Yuni, saying she is “number one” and hugging her, pulling Yuni into a tense triangle.

The story is not a simple betrayal. Yuni’s heart remains with Nanase, but her unmet needs and desire for connection create a complex emotional landscape. Author Iwami Kiyoko, known for works like “Luminous Blue” and “Toumei na Usui Mizuiro ni,” is a celebrated yuri mangaka.

A Misalignment That Cannot Be Explained as Cheating

Nanase and Yuni are lovers, but their relationship is hidden from others. Nanase is dedicated to volleyball, leaving little time for Yuni. Yuni tries to understand, but the secret relationship and lack of quality time deepen her sense of isolation. Her secret SNS account becomes an outlet, but it’s a precarious act of seeking acceptance. When Fuuko learns of the account, the story shifts. Fuuko wipes Yuni’s tears, saying, “I’m fine being second… but Yuni-chan is my number one. I love you most in the world.” Yuni is both repelled and attracted to Fuuko’s affection.

Three Girls, Each with Their Own Rightness

The brilliance of this manga lies in not portraying the situation as simple cheating. Yuni’s feelings are always directed at Nanase; she doesn’t switch to Fuuko. Yet her heart leans toward someone not her lover due to dissatisfaction within the relationship and a longing for connection. The complex love-hate is meticulously depicted. Each character has a perspective: Nanase keeps the relationship secret out of love, but Yuni isn’t interested in her volleyball stories. Fuuko has past romantic trauma. No one is a clear villain, giving the story a realistic texture.

The Pain of a Love Where No One Is the Villain – The Appeal of a Realistic Yuri Drama

“Kyou wa Kanojo ga Inai kara” carefully portrays how relationships change and waver. By neither affirming nor denying specific emotions, it raises questions about the complexity of human connections. Readers may find their own values reflected in whom they sympathize with.
