In its 11th week of release, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, with cumulative earnings reaching $1,000,020,893 (approximately ¥160.32 billion at current exchange rates), according to Box Office Mojo figures as of June 7. The film continues to perform strongly, also setting new records for foreign-language releases in Japan in fiscal 2026.

Sequel to the Record-Breaking Mario Movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the second animated feature based on Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise, following 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1.3 billion globally. The new film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, with Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Miyamoto Shigeru returning as producers.

The story follows Mario and Luigi, twin plumbers who help Princess Peach in the Mushroom Kingdom, care for the captive Bowser, and solve everyone’s problems. When they meet a new partner, Yoshi, and attend Princess Peach’s birthday party, they must foil the evil ambitions of Bowser Jr. and protect Rosalina on an intergalactic adventure.

Staff and Cast

Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return from the first film, along with screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Composer Brian Tyler also returns for the score. The English voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Luis Guzmán, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Brie Larson.

The Japanese dub cast features Miyano Mamoru as Mario, Shida Arisa as Princess Peach, Hatanaka Yū as Luigi, Miyake Kenta as Bowser, Seki Tomokazu as Toad, Sakamoto Maaya as Rosalina, and Yamashita Daiki as Bowser Jr.

Japan Box Office Milestone

In Japan, the movie is now in its 7th week of release. Over the weekend of June 5–7, it earned ¥157,473,010, bringing the cumulative total to ¥7,375,108,040. This figure surpasses Despicable Me 3 (2017) at ¥7.32 billion, making The Super Mario Galaxy Movie the second-highest-grossing Illumination film in Japan. The top spot remains held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, meaning the two Mario films now occupy the top two positions on Illumination’s Japan charts. The film is also setting new records for foreign-language releases in 2026.
