Godzilla Meets Neon Ukiyo-e: New Art Series Features Shinjuku, Dotonbori, and Susukino

A new series of artworks that imagine Godzilla suddenly appearing in modern Japanese cityscapes, rendered in the unique “Neon Ukiyo-e” style, has been released. The prints went on sale June 12, 2026, via the Hanza online shop “Ukiyo-e Kobo.”

The “Neon Ukiyo-e” series blends the compositions and atmosphere of traditional Japanese woodblock prints with a cyberpunk aesthetic of neon-lit contemporary cities. The dark-night silhouettes of Godzilla, the glow of neon signs, and a girl who notices the anomaly combine to create a dramatic scene reminiscent of a film still. This horror-tinged depiction of the extraordinary lurking within the ordinary is a key appeal of the series.

Each work is produced as a giclée print on handmade washi paper. The soft texture and subdued colors of washi give the vivid neon imagery a nostalgic, dreamlike quality.

Sapporo: Homage to a Classic Battle

The new work “Neon Ukiyo-e Godzilla Sapporo no Zu Giclée Print” is set in Sapporo’s Susukino district. It pays homage to the famous scene from Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) where Godzilla fights near the Sapporo TV Tower and Odori Park, with numerous elements from the film woven into the composition.

The neon signs in the night town include parodies based on names from the movie. In the background, the silhouette of King Ghidorah is subtly hidden—a detail that will captivate film fans. The girl who notices Godzilla is based on the character Emmy Kano from the film, adding further depth to the work.

Shinjuku: The Godzilla of Shinjuku Toho

“Neon Ukiyo-e Godzilla Shinjuku no Zu Giclée Print” depicts Shinjuku at night illuminated by neon, inspired by the “Shinjuku Toho Godzilla.” The image of a girl noticing Godzilla emerging from behind a hotel creates a sense of quiet terror and excitement.

Osaka: Dotonbori in Chaos

“Neon Ukiyo-e Godzilla Osaka no Zu Giclée Print” captures Godzilla appearing in the neon district of Dotonbori. The bustle of the city and the overwhelming presence of the monster intertwine to create a unique sense of unreality.
