From the summer anime Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru II, the synopsis and preview cuts for Episode 1, titled “Katainaka no Ossan, Atarashii Shokuba ni Iku” (The Old Man from the Sticks Goes to a New Workplace), have been released. The episode is scheduled to begin airing on July 8, 2026.
Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru is a fantasy sword-fighting series based on the original novels by Sagasaki Shigeru with illustrations by Nabeshima Tetsuhiro. Together with the manga adaptation by Satoru Kazuki and two spin-off titles, the series has sold over 10 million copies. The first season of the TV anime aired from April to June 2025 and became a hit, reaching the top 10 on Prime Video in over 45 countries and regions.
In the second season, Beryl Gardenant, the former sword master from a remote village, now serves as a special instructor for the Knights Order and is gradually getting used to life in the capital while also acting as a guardian for orphans. However, his surroundings do not allow him peace. He faces new challenges at a magical academy, his hometown, a border barony, and a foreign land full of schemes. Beryl must confront unavoidable battles both as a swordsman and as a person.
The series continues to be directed by Kasumi Akio, with animation production by Passione and Hayabusa Film, and features Hirata Hiroaki as Beryl Gardenant.
Episode 1 Synopsis
A few months after being appointed as the special instructor for the Reberio Knights, Beryl has become accustomed to life in the capital. One day, Lucy and Fissel visit his home.
Their purpose is to invite Beryl to serve as a temporary instructor at the Magic Academy. After some hesitation, Beryl tentatively agrees and observes Fissel’s teaching methods in the Sword Magic Department, where Mui also studies. When a student asks a question, Beryl ends up sparring with Fissel.
Episode 1 of Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru II will air on July 8 (Wednesday) on the TV Asahi network’s “IMAnimation W” slot nationwide, as well as on BS Asahi and AT-X. Following the broadcast, it will be available for streaming exclusively on Prime Video from July 9 (Thursday).
