September 8th is celebrated as Mascara Day in Japan! This special day was established by a cosmetics company, playing on the Japanese phonetics of “Kukkiri (9) pacchiri (8),” which evokes the image of clear, sparkling eyes. Mascara, indeed, is an indispensable tool in makeup, perfect for accentuating one’s eye area and making them pop.
Just like in real-life beauty, eyes are a crucial element in shaping a character’s appeal and impression in the vibrant world of anime and manga. From the unique color and sparkle of their pupils to extraordinarily long eyelashes or even eyes imbued with special powers, the design of a character’s eyes boasts incredible individuality. Many of you can probably identify a character instantly just by looking into their eyes, can’t you?

Following last year’s overwhelming response, Anime!Anime! is excited to announce our newest reader survey: “Who is your most memorable character by their eyes?” We invite you to share your thoughts in a free-form response. Simply tell us which character, along with their work title, truly stands out to you for their impressive gaze!

- This survey is open to characters from any 2D content, including anime (TV broadcast, films, streaming, OVA, etc.), games, CD series, and manga.
- Only one entry per person, please.
- Basic information such as gender and age are optional, and you are welcome to participate without providing them. Everyone is encouraged to join in!
The deadline for submissions is August 28th. We will publish the survey results as soon as they are compiled, so look forward to seeing the rankings!
