“Kusuriya no Hitorigoto”: Maomao and Jinshi Sparkle Metallically ♪ Shogakukan Version Manga Adaptation Latest Volume Bookstore Fair Held
The latest 20th volume of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto ~Maomao no Koukyuu Nazotoki Techou~, which is serialized in “Monthly Sunday GX” as a manga adaptation of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, was released on May 19, 2025. To commemorate this, a novelty fair is currently being held at bookstores where you can receive a “Two-faced Character Card”.
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is a rear palace mystery-solving entertainment based on the novel by Hinatsu Natsu, published under “Hero Bunko”, which has surpassed a cumulative 40 million copies in the series. Set in a fictional Eastern land in the Middle Ages, it depicts Maomao, a young girl who serves as a “poison tester”, solving various difficult cases that occur within the palace walls one after another. Two manga adaptations are underway, and the Shogakukan “Monthly Sunday GX” version, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto ~Maomao no Koukyuu Nazotoki Techou~, features artwork by Kurata Minjiro.
The TV anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Season 2, which is currently airing, is also generating excitement, with a wide variety of collaboration products being developed, such as the collaboration “Okusuri Techou” with the Japan Pharmaceutical Association, which garnered significant attention. The excitement is rising even higher with the first-ever collaboration attraction with Universal Studios Japan, “Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Mystery Walk ~Investigate the Mysterious Medicine~”, scheduled for this summer.
This novelty fair is being held at target bookstores nationwide to celebrate the series’ growing popularity and the release of the latest 20th volume of the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto ~Maomao no Koukyuu Nazotoki Techou~ manga. The “Two-faced Character Card” you receive one per eligible purchase is a special item you can only get here, drawn by Kurata Minjiro, featuring Maomao as a pharmacist and Maomao as a dancer, placed top and bottom as if on a playing card, shining with a metallic gleam.
Besides those, there are a total of 5 types of cards available, all of which make you want to collect them. These include a card featuring Jinshi in that particular appearance, a card capturing Maomao and Jinshi in that look when they dealt with the beautiful sisters serving as envoys from a foreign land, and a card showing Rihaku, who looks like a puppy, in an unexpected pose. Which other characters’ designs are included is a surprise to discover by collecting them!
The latest 20th volume of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto ~Maomao no Koukyuu Nazotoki Techou~ is now on sale. The standard edition is 770 yen (tax included), and the special edition with original playing cards is 2,420 yen (tax included).
