Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Grand Scale Success
The hugely popular Jujutsu Kaisen is based on the manga by Akutami Gege, serialized in “Weekly Shounen Jump”. The TV anime adaptation first aired in October 2020, and the film Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen 0, released in December 2021, became a massive worldwide hit, grossing an incredible 26.5 billion yen.
The film Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen “Shibuya Jihen Tokubetsu Henshuuban” x “Shimetu Kaiyuu Senkou Jouei”, which premiered on November 7, 2026, has already achieved impressive numbers. Within its first 10 days, as of November 16, it has surpassed 740,000 attendees and an astounding 1.12 billion yen in box office revenue.

Tsuda Kenjirou as Nanami Kento

――How do you perceive the fans’ enthusiasm? Do you have any memorable anecdotes with them?
Even before I joined as a voice actor, the original manga itself was incredibly popular, which left a strong impression on me. When it was announced that I would be portraying Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, the weekend was buzzing with excitement. Then, the following Monday, “Jump” was released, and Nanami died in the manga. The stark contrast and emotional whiplash within those few days were immense. Even before my involvement, the fervor for Jujutsu Kaisen was tremendous, and with the synergy between the anime and manga from the first season, the animation’s popularity soared. I keenly felt the work’s influence and appeal. It was simultaneously streamed worldwide, so I noticed its immense popularity not just in Japan but globally. In fact, when I traveled abroad, many foreigners approached me, and when I asked how they knew, almost all of them said they watched Jujutsu Kaisen.

――In the “Shibuya Jihen” arc, how did you feel while portraying Nanami’s final monologue and his battles against the Cursed Spirits?
I already knew the ending before entering the “Shibuya Jihen” arc, so when the recording began, I felt a mix of excitement that I could bring “Shibuya Jihen” to life and a deep sense of sadness knowing I would be graduating from the role. When I performed, I poured my all into portraying Nanami, leaving no regrets.
After finishing everything, I felt like my journey with Jujutsu Kaisen had, in a way, concluded. I truly believe that Nanami’s final moments were depicted with such care and detail. I felt the love for Nanami from the director and the anime staff as I performed, and it felt as if everyone, in their respective roles, was sending Nanami off. It was a scene created by all of us, filled with love and unwavering dedication.
Sakurai Takahiro as Getou Suguru

――When Pseudo-Getou first appears before Gojou, it’s a reunion with a dear friend whom Gojou believed he had killed. What points did you particularly focus on when portraying this scene?
I tried to express it in a way that would make Gojou feel a sense of unease, suspicion, and eeriness, making him waver in that moment. The goal was to seal Gojou in the Prison Realm, and an immense amount of time had been spent preparing for that. However, I believe Pseudo-Getou had a certain conviction that Gojou would definitely be sealed, which is why he spoke with such malice. In that regard, as Pseudo-Getou, I wanted to enjoy the conversation, and not just in terms of character expression, but I think I personally had a bit of fun with it.

――You have portrayed various iterations of Getou: during his time at Jujutsu High, as a Cursed User, and as Kamo Noritoshi. What kind of existence is Getou to you, Sakurai-san?
Up until his Jujutsu High and Cursed User eras, especially since the anime adaptation was confirmed, I meticulously followed his journey. I approached him with the mindset of understanding his feelings, but also pondering if there could have been other paths for him. The words he spoke when he parted ways with Gojou, “I’ve decided how I’ll live,” left a strong impression on me, including the doubt of whether there was another way. It wasn’t merely resolve. His resolve had long been set; he had decided how to live. It was clear that his chosen path was not what Satoru envisioned. He essentially challenged Satoru, saying, “If you want to kill me for this, then kill me, because there is significance and meaning in it.” I approached the recording with the intention of not making his feelings in that confrontation seem malicious. From the Kamo Noritoshi part onwards, it became a bit more challenging, and it’s hard to articulate, but I focused on the mechanics of the character’s expression. It’s like a mathematical or musical approach, as it’s often described. It’s about manipulating the voice as a sound. From a performer’s perspective, it offers a different kind of enjoyment, but as an acting challenge, it’s an unusual and difficult method. However, portraying Getou Suguru in the “Kaigyoku Gyokusetsu” arc was enjoyable. I’m deeply experiencing the various levels of “fun” and “intrigue” within a single character.
