Global Release and Box Office Domination

The movie Gekijouban “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Mugen Jou Hen Dai Isshou: Akaza Futatabi (also known as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Arc Chapter 1: Akaza Reappears) is currently thrilling audiences in theaters worldwide, thanks to a joint distribution deal by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Fresh updates on its overseas box office performance have just landed, and the numbers are absolutely staggering. For clarity in this article, “anime” refers to Japanese animation works, while “animation” covers all animated works, including anime.

What is Kimetsu no Yaiba All About?

Kimetsu no Yaiba (often translated as Demon Slayer) is a massively popular anime based on the manga by Gotouge Koyoharu, published in Shueisha’s “Jump Comics” with 23 volumes that have sold over 220 million copies worldwide. The story follows Kamado Tanjirou, a boy whose family is slaughtered by demons, as he joins the Demon Slayer Corps to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human. It’s a heartfelt tale of humans and demons, packed with intense sword fights, captivating characters, and occasional comedic moments that have won hearts globally.

From TV Series to Blockbuster Movie Trilogy

The anime is produced by the renowned studio ufotable, which kicked off the series with TV Anime “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Kamado Tanjirou Risshi Hen in April 2019. Now, the saga escalates with the Gekijouban “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Mugen Jou Hen (Infinity Castle Arc), a theatrical trilogy that depicts the final showdown between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons in their stronghold, the “Infinity Castle.” The first chapter, Dai Isshou: Akaza Futatabi, premiered on July 18, setting the stage for an epic confrontation.

Record-Breaking International Success

This film isn’t just a hit—it’s a global phenomenon. Globally, it ranks 6th among all 2025 releases in box office revenue and has achieved the highest-grossing anime film ever in 56 countries. In the United States, it soared past Green Destiny (2020) to become the highest-grossing foreign film of all time.

In the U.S., it claimed the #1 spot for opening day box office among anime films and also topped the opening weekend charts. This performance shattered the record held by Gekijouban Pocket Monster Mewtwo no Gyakushuu (1999), which earned $31 million. As an animation film released in September, its opening weekend revenue also outpaced Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) at $48.5 million. Moreover, as an R-rated animation (requiring parental accompaniment for under 17), it set a new opening weekend record, surpassing Sausage Party‘s $34 million.

Awards and Accolades Pouring In

The accolades don’t stop at the box office. The film has been nominated for the Golden Globe Award in the “Best Motion Picture – Animated” category and for the Astra Film Awards’ “Best Animated Feature.” The Astra Film Awards are selected by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, a membership-based non-profit comprising critics, journalists, creators, and industry professionals in entertainment. Additionally, at CineAsia held in Bangkok, Thailand from December 8 to 11, it was honored with the Comscore’s 2025 APAC Box Office Achievement Award, which recognizes works with outstanding box office and cultural impact in the Asia-Pacific region.

Still Going Strong in Japan

Back in Japan, the excitement continues unabated. Starting December 20, the 12th round of audience appreciation gifts, the “Pamphlet Supplementary Reader ~Demon Slayer Corps Edition~,” began distribution, featuring original animation cels from the film. With such momentum, Gekijouban “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Mugen Jou Hen Dai Isshou: Akaza Futatabi remains a must-watch, and its overseas performance and reception are definitely worth keeping an eye on.
