A No-Face (Kaonashi) piggy bank from Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi has become an internet sensation—not for greedily gobbling up coins, but for stubbornly refusing a 100 yen piece. A video posted to X (formerly Twitter) by photographer Seki Kazuya (@kazuyaseki86) shows the character extending its tray with a 100 yen coin, only to close its mouth without taking it, leaving the coin teetering on the edge. The clip has exploded with over 1.8 million views, sparking a flood of amused comments like “Is it a counterfeit coin detector?” and “It’s demanding at least a 500 yen coin!”
Speaking about the incident, Seki admitted his frustration: “I tried it many times and it kept failing, so honestly I got annoyed (laughs).” The piggy bank is designed so that the weight of a coin tilts the tray, allowing No-Face to ‘eat’ it. But Seki noted, “There seems to be individual differences—another No-Face piggy bank accepted 100 yen coins just fine.”
Seki’s favorite comment from the viral thread was “Is it a counterfeit coin detector??” Social media users couldn’t resist comparing the behavior to No-Face’s in-film personality: a character who can produce anything from his hands but also devours everything in a frenzy. The piggy bank’s picky eating—seemingly rejecting “trivial change”—has given fans a new layer of humor.
As for the future of this finicky No-Face, Seki jokingly declared, “I’m not giving it anything anymore!!! …I’ll use that 100 yen for the vending machine.” Though the piggy bank may not produce gold and silver, it has delivered something equally valuable: laughter across social media.
