The final episode of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Season 4’s Soushitsu-hen (Loss Arc) aired on June 17, delivering a heart-wrenching climax that left fans in tears. Episode 77, the 11th and last of the arc, saw Subaru pushed to his absolute limit—and pulled back by Emilia’s unwavering kindness.
A Descent into Madness
Picking up from the previous episode’s cliffhanger, Ram confronts Subaru with cold suspicion, accusing him of murdering Meili. Trapped in an ice cage created by Emilia, Subaru finally admits he has lost his memory—only to enrage Ram further. When Ram’s attack lands, Subaru’s consciousness jumps, and he finds himself in a nightmarish version of the tower: the ice cage shattered, walls scrawled with “Natsuki Subaru Sanjou,” and Reid Astrea inexplicably present. Monsters flood the tower, Julius fights alone, and Meili’s ghost taunts him.
Reid engages Julius, and Echidna (Anastasia) turns hostile after hearing Ram’s report. Only Beatrice still trusts Subaru. Broken, Subaru unleashes a desperate outburst: “Acting?! You call this acting?! Who would choose to be Natsuki Subaru?! I lost everything! I was just coming back from the convenience store… And suddenly another world?! Sand tower?! Corpses?! Tests?! Fakes?! Natsuki Subaru?! Don’t mess with me!!”
Fans on X sympathized deeply. “This is the most gut-wrenching scene in Re:Zero Season 4,” one wrote. “Watching Beatrice see her partner fall apart is truly painful.”
Despite his breakdown, Subaru tries to protect Echidna for Julius’s sake, but a scorpion monster’s corpse explodes, killing Beatrice. Echidna loses both legs and dies. The Witch of Envy, Satella, appears, forcing Subaru to realize his mistake in doubting his friends. Overwhelmed with despair, he contemplates disappearing—until Emilia arrives.
Emilia’s Gentle Recollection
Emilia saves Subaru from Satella’s illusion and, though shocked by the deaths, speaks softly. She recounts their first meeting, how she brought the injured Subaru to Roswaal’s mansion, his friendships with Beatrice, Ram, and Rem, their battle with Meili’s beasts, their “date” promise, and their big fight in the royal capital. “I remember everything. Everything you said, everything you did, everything you promised to do. I remember it all.”
Fans wept: “Emilia’s ‘remember?’ voice was too gentle, I cried.” But Subaru still can’t recall, and he lashes out, calling himself a hopeless jerk. Emilia responds with the same gentle tone: “My name is Emilia. Just Emilia. There’s so much we need to talk about, so much I need to ask. But for now, just one thing: please, tell me your name.”
This mirrors their first encounter, when Emilia pretended to be Satella. Now she reverses the roles, guiding Subaru to start anew. Finally, Subaru accepts his identity: “My name is Natsuki Subaru. Entrusted by Julius, believed in by Beatrice, forgiven by Echidna, and wished for by you, Emilia—if that man’s name is Natsuki Subaru, then I am Natsuki Subaru.”
With his resolve restored, Subaru uses Return by Death to reset to the save point, determined to face the crisis as Natsuki Subaru.
“This rivals Rem’s confession from Season 1 Episode 18,” fans exclaimed. The Soushitsu-hen concluded its 11-episode run, leaving viewers desperate for more. The Dakkan-hen (Recovery Arc), consisting of 8 episodes, begins August 12 (Wednesday).
