What is Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor? A Legacy of Mecha and Mystery

The Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor project is a groundbreaking multimedia franchise born from the creative minds of “HEADGEAR,” a unit composed of five brilliant creators: Yuuki Masami, Izubuchi Yutaka, Itou Kazunori, Takada Akemi, and Oshii Mamoru. This captivating series transports us to a near-future Tokyo, where the widespread use of general-purpose humanoid laboring machines, known as “Labors,” has given rise to new social threats: “Labor crimes.”

The story follows the daily lives and valiant efforts of Special Vehicle Section 2 (Tokusou Ni-ka), a division of “robot police officers” dedicated to confronting these emergent dangers. What began with six OVA (Original Video Animation) episodes, later dubbed “Early Days,” and a concurrent manga serialization by Yuuki Masami, quickly blossomed into a sprawling universe. The franchise rapidly expanded with successive theatrical films, TV anime series, novels, audio dramas, and even games, transcending media boundaries to produce a vast collection of works.
In 2014, the live-action drama and film series, THE NEXT GENERATION Patlabor, was produced with Oshii Mamoru serving as general director. The year 2018 marked the franchise’s 30th anniversary, celebrated with numerous successful exhibitions and events that delighted fans. Looking ahead, a new anime project, Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor EZY, is set to commence in 2026, promising even more exciting developments for this beloved series.
