Shuumatsu Touring is a truly unique touring manga by Saitou Sakae, serialized in the monthly comic magazine “Dengeki Maoh.” It tells the story of two girls and their trusty Serow off-road motorcycle as they explore a desolate, ruined Japan. Youko and Airi capture memories by taking photos at famous landmarks, enjoy camping in nature-filled towns, and travel through a silent, post-apocalyptic world. Riding tandem on their Serow, they experience an unparalleled sense of freedom, unhindered by traffic jams or pesky traffic lights.

Animation production for this captivating series is handled by Nexus. The adventurous girls are brought to life by Inagaki Konomi, who voices Youko, and Tomita Miyu, who voices Airi.

※Please be aware that due to the nature of this topic, the following text contains descriptions that may include “spoilers” for those who have not yet watched the series. Proceed with caution.

Pre-Broadcast Buzz and Fan Excitement

Before Episode 4 aired, Saitou Sakae-sensei, the original author, shared his excitement on social media. He reported the launch of Akihabara-themed merchandise, exclaiming, “An event at Akihabara Gamers, which I even drew on the cover! And coincidentally? Today’s Episode 4 is also the ‘Akihabara’ episode! Looking forward to it!” Indeed, the cover of the second manga volume prominently features Akihabara.

Inagaki Konomi-san, the voice of Youko, also posted her enthusiasm before the broadcast: “Episode 4 airs today! Akihabara~! Anyaan is so moe! What was the true identity of the voice we heard last time?! Today, I’m with Youko and Airi!”

The Youko and Airi merchandise she showcased is part of a collaboration with Bakudanyaki Honpo. This special collaboration event has been running since October 24th at various locations, including the Ikebukuro Honten, Toukyou Dome City-ten, Morioka Shibutami Ion-ten, and Oita Yufuin-ten.

Exploring Akihabara: From Maid Cafes to Wild Animals

Following the mysterious radio voice heard at the end of Episode 3, Youko and Airi make their way to Akihabara. As they explore the abandoned electric town, their curiosity is piqued by relics of the past, such as robot models and an oden vending machine.

Online, viewers were captivated by the sight of Akihabara in its ruined state, with comments like, “Akihabara is quite well preserved, huh?” and “So it collapsed when it was still ‘Akihabara’ as we know it.”

When Youko wistfully mused, “It must have been such a fun city, don’t you think? I wish I could have experienced it~,” Airi had a surprise in store. She led Youko to a place with “WELCOME HOME NYAN” written at the entrance, filled with countless dust-covered maid outfits.

Soon, Youko and Airi were dressed up, Youko as a cat-eared butler and Airi as a maid. It was a “Neko Maid Kissa” (cat maid cafe)! Airi, in her characteristic way, greeted Youko with “Welcome home, Goshujin-sama. Nyan, nyan.” After enjoying some maid role-playing, they continued the fun with a photoshoot featuring Airi as the model.

Myuk, the artist behind the ending theme “Glide,” was also charmed by their cosplay, tweeting, “Both of them in cosplay are just adorable…”

Then, in Akihabara, various exotic animals began to appear one after another, starting with monkey-like creatures, then capybaras, elephants, and more! These animals seemed to be the descendants of those who had escaped from Ueno Zoo in the neighboring town.

The internet was abuzz with surprised reactions to this wild, post-apocalyptic Akihabara, with comments like, “Akiba looks like a zoo,” “Shoebill-san!!” and “Akihabara has turned into a zoo…”

A Soundtrack of Nostalgia: Anime Hits on the Airwaves

As evening approached, Youko and Airi tuned into the radio again. They managed to pinpoint the location of the Akiba Broadcasting Station, where “Akibajiro” was supposedly broadcasting. The music playing on the radio sparked immediate reactions online.

Fans exclaimed, “They played ‘Blooming Lily’ sung by Sawamura Spencer Eriri (Oonishi-chan)!” and “It’s been a while since I heard ‘Blooming Lily’!” This was indeed “Blooming Lily,” sung by the incredibly popular doujin artist Sawamura Spencer Eriri (CV. Oonishi Saori), a character from the TV anime Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata (also known as Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend).

Given the specific setting, online comments also poured in, with some saying, Shuumatsu Touring, I can recognize all the places…” and “That ruined structure in front of the station is definitely Akihabara UDX…”

Entering through an underground passage, Youko and Airi finally reached the Akiba Broadcasting Station. Beyond the door, from which music could be heard, awaited another surprise.

As Youko and her companion stepped into the Akiba Broadcasting Station, a melody familiar to many anime fans filled the air.

Reactions online were immediate and enthusiastic: “The Aobuta ED played in Shuumatsu Touring main story, lol,” “Why is Shuumatsu Touring playing Aobuta‘s ending song!?”, Shuumatsu Touring, ‘Fukashigi no Karte’ is playing www,” “To think I’d hear a previous season’s anime ED in Shuumatsu Touring…”, and Shuumatsu Touring‘s song selection is exquisite.”

It was “Fukashigi no Karte,” a beloved song that plays throughout the Seishun Buta Yarou (known in English as *Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai*) anime series. And in the Akiba Broadcasting Station, the musical discoveries continued.

When the “Radio Song” segment was introduced in the end credits, viewers buzzed about “Blooming Lily,” “Fukashigi no Karte,” and yet another surprise track.

Comments flooded in: “High Free Spirits!?!?!?”, “High Free Spirits, seriously?????”, “Was High Free Spirits also playing? I wondered where, but it was just a tiny bit of the outro before ‘Fukashigi no Karte’.”

“High Free Spirits” is the opening theme song for the TV anime High School Fleet (often abbreviated as *Haifuri*), which aired in 2016. It’s performed by the voice actor unit “TrySail,” consisting of Asakura Momo, Amamiya Sora, and Natsukawa Shiina. This time, as Youko and Airi arrived at the Akiba Broadcasting Station, a brief snippet of its outro (the end of the song) played momentarily from a crack in the door.

Post-Broadcast Reflections and Continuing Journeys

After the broadcast, Inagaki Konomi-san shared her thoughts on the journey to Akihabara: “It was an episode that brought out so many emotions… I received Akibatarou’s feelings…! The cat-eared maid and butler were also the best.”

Myuk also offered her comments, reflecting on the episode’s poignant themes: “Witnessed the journey to Akihabara, feeling that human bustle and vibrancy are also part of a city’s landscape… The radio broadcast in the post-apocalyptic world was poignant… Yet, it was still a heartwarming Episode 4. The phrase ‘Te no Hira wo Taiyou ni’ (Palm to the Sun) is also in the lyrics of ‘Glide,’ so please give it a listen.”

Saitou Sakae-sensei delighted fans by posting an illustration of Anyaan as a twin-tailed maid!

Youko and Airi’s incredible journey continues.
