“Maison Ikkoku,” “Kimagure Orange☆Road,” “Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Ai Oboete Imasu ka”… 80s Masterpiece Anime Adorn McDonald’s New Collaboration CM♪ Released
Popular scenes from the 1980s masterpiece anime Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange☆Road, and Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Ai Oboete Imasu ka have been combined for a new collaboration CM between McDonald’s “Big Mac” and “Coca-Cola”. The CM, titled “Ashita mo Warao Ano Koro mo Ima mo,” will begin airing on July 1, 2025.

Step back in time to the vibrant 1980s! Popular scenes from the beloved series Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange☆Road, and Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Ai Oboete Imasu ka have been blended together for a nostalgic new collaboration TV commercial from McDonald’s Big Mac and Coca-Cola. Titled “Ashita mo Warao Ano Koro mo Ima mo” (Let’s Laugh Tomorrow Too, Back Then and Now), the CM is set to air starting July 1, 2025. This new commercial is a must-see, featuring a captivating mix of “nostalgic melodies × nostalgic anime × visual beauty.” Comments have also arrived from individuals involved with the featured anime, including Takahashi Rumiko, WAVE STUDIO (the production studio for Matsumoto Izumi), and director Kawamori Shouji.

This new collaboration CM follows up on the “Ashita mo, Warao.” (Let’s Laugh Tomorrow, Too.) commercial, which aired last July. That previous CM also used the legendary “I feel Coke” song from Coca-Cola and symbolized the “ultimate combination” of Big Mac and Coca-Cola. It received widespread feedback across generations, with older viewers fondly remembering the refreshing feel of the original Coca-Cola CMs and celebrating the song’s revival, while younger viewers who heard the song for the first time expressed feelings of emotion and novelty.
The new TV CM for this year was created with the desire to deliver this emotion and smiles to even more people. It further incorporates popular scenes from three masterpiece anime of the 1980s: Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange☆Road, and Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Ai Oboete Imasu ka. Featuring the smile of Moriya Rena from Sakurazaka46, this collaboration video is even more powerful than last year’s, conveying the ultimate combination of Big Mac and Coca-Cola.

Comments regarding the CM have also been received from individuals connected to the three featured anime: Takahashi Rumiko, the author of Maison Ikkoku; WAVE STUDIO, the production studio for Matsumoto Izumi of Kimagure Orange☆Road; director Kawamori Shouji from Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Ai Oboete Imasu ka; and the performer Moriya Rena.

It’s an honor to be able to participate in a McDonald’s CM!!

It was an era where society as a whole had a lot of energy, and everyone was absorbed in their work and romance. To have Kimagure Orange☆Road selected alongside other renowned anime series for this “Big Mac” × “I feel Coke” CM, which brings back memories of that time, was a truly pleasant surprise. Each cut from the anime brought back various emotions, as if they were my own personal experiences. While the CM has a nostalgic atmosphere of that time, the scenes depicted are universal enough to resonate with any generation, aren’t they?
Whether you lived through the same era as Kimagure Orange☆Road or are younger, we hope you can feel the excitement and energy of the time these works were created through this CM, and that you’ll also enjoy the charm of the heroines and the worldviews common to these three anime series by watching the anime themselves.

Among the many impressive TV and OVA anime from the 80s, I am honestly very happy and grateful that they chose the theatrical film “Ai Oboete Imasu ka”. I’m glad I drew a scene where Minmay and others are eating hamburgers (laughs).
Watching the CM footage, it has a sweet and sour, refreshing youthful feeling, and the atmosphere of the era comes back, making me feel very nostalgic. I can feel the vibe of Japan from back then, including surfing, cars, fashion, and the heyday of idols in the 80s. The BGM from that time that is used is also nostalgic, making me truly feel that “songs transcend time.” Although it was over 40 years ago, listening to the music and watching the video makes me feel like I’ve time-traveled back to that time, giving a sense of “transcending time and space,” a “Choujikuukan” feeling. The theme of “Macross” includes “culture shock,” and I was reminded again that food and drinks like Big Mac and Coca-Cola are also “food culture = culture.” I hope you can enjoy the CM footage with that feeling, reminiscing about the era.

When I was little, I used to order a Happy Set with my friends and pick out my favorite toy, and playing on the playground equipment at the store was also one of the things I looked forward to. In my school days, “Shall we stop by McDonald’s after club activities today?” became a sort of catchphrase with my friends. I am honored to appear in a McDonald’s CM, as McDonald’s has watched over my growth. It’s always been close by, and although I hadn’t really thought about it again, looking back, I received so many big smiles. I think this work will feel both new and nostalgic. I would be happy if watching this CM makes people smile big along with their Big Mac.
