An Interview with Umeda Shuuichirou and Tazawa Masumi from `Mikata ga Yowasugite Hojo Mahou ni Tesshiteita Kyuutei Mahoushi, Tsuihou sarete Saikyou wo Mezasu`!
The TV anime `Mikata ga Yowasugite Hojo Mahou ni Tesshiteita Kyuutei Mahoushi, Tsuihou sarete Saikyou wo Mezasu`, (which can be translated as “The Court Mage Who Devoted Himself to Auxiliary Magic Because His Allies Were Too Weak, Was Banished and Aims to Become the Strongest”), is set to begin broadcasting sequentially from Saturday, October 4, 2025, across TV Asahi’s national 24-station network’s “IMAnimation” block, BS Asahi, and AT-X.
The original work is an enthralling isekai fantasy novel by Aruto, currently published by Kodansha’s “K Ranobe Books.” It achieved the top spot in the quarterly rankings on “Shousetsuka ni Narou” (a popular web novel platform) as of December 17, 2020.
The story follows the court mage and protagonist, Alec Eugret, who, after being unjustly banished, embarks on a new adventure alongside his companions from the legendary party “Lasting Period,” aiming to become the strongest.
Anime!Anime! had the special opportunity to interview Umeda Shuuichirou-san, the voice actor for the protagonist Alec Eugret, and Tazawa Masumi-san, who voices Curashia Annelose, a member of “Lasting Period.”
Reflecting on Their Audition Experiences: “The Longest Title in My Career!”
―Could you share your feelings again about when you found out you were cast?
Umeda-san: My first thought was, “This is the work with the longest title in my entire career!” Beyond that, I was really excited from the audition stage about getting to portray the cool battle scenes as a magician. It’s rare to encounter such genuinely cool magic, so I was incredibly happy. I couldn’t wait to meet everyone and start working.
Tazawa-san: Actually, I also auditioned for the role of Yorha. However, when I received the call confirming I was cast, I immediately thought to myself, “It must be Curashia!” I had a strong feeling of confidence that I had truly captured Curashia’s essence during the audition. I remember the audition for Curashia included a combat scene, and I sensed that this was a crucial aspect of the character. I’m so glad I gave it my all.
Key Focus Points and Particularities During Performance
―When you were actually performing, what specific points did you particularly focus on, or what were your particularities?
Umeda-san: Alec was originally a very curious, highly ambitious, and confident young man. But after serving in the royal court, he was unjustly banished and experienced a significant setback. The story begins with him having lost his confidence, so you can often catch glimpses of his timid side in whatever he does. However, as time passes and he communicates with his companions, he gradually regains his former self, and even surpasses his past magical abilities. His gentle and kind appearance might make him seem like a timid protagonist at first glance, but the true Alec is actually quite fierce. He’s the type who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Honest and work alongside him. What I most wanted to convey was Alec’s true nature, that he’s surprisingly aggressive and physically capable. On the other hand, I also wanted to properly express his politeness when interacting with Yorha-chan and everyone else. And of course, I aimed to make the magic spells sound incredibly cool.
Tazawa-san: Was it difficult?
Umeda-san: Yes, it was! Some magic names are words we know from everyday life, so conveying them coolly again was really interesting. And every time, Honest, too, is the type to shout his lines. Minakami-san really puts his all into it, to the point of almost losing his voice! That kind of passion inspired me to give my best when playing Alec.
Tazawa-san: Indeed, he often asked to do takes again, and I could tell he had a strong dedication to his performance.
Umeda-san: I made sure to stick to the parts where I felt, “This is non-negotiable!” so in those aspects, I might have something in common with Alec.
Tazawa-san: For me, the scenes where Curashia and Honest fight? Or rather, their playful teasing? I went all out! It was so much fun to perform!
Excellent Teamwork in the Recording Studio! “Incredibly Warm Members”
―The teamwork within the “Lasting Period” is also a major highlight. How was the teamwork with your fellow cast members? Could you share any memorable episodes from the recording sessions?
Umeda-san: When there are many battle scenes, there are actually a lot of things you need to be mindful of. Beyond just acting, you have to consider the pacing and flow. During those times, everyone on set was on high alert, and it felt like we were all running together. For example, even if I had a long monologue scene by myself, I felt incredibly supported by everyone behind me. I think everyone probably felt that way. There was naturally an atmosphere where we all felt, “Everyone is here for us.”
Tazawa-san: They really are such incredibly warm members!
―Are there any points you would particularly like viewers to pay attention to?
Tazawa-san: For me, it’s Yorha-chan’s cuteness! Kubo-san’s acting was so incredibly adorable. I was personally so excited, thinking that once it’s fully animated, she’ll become even cuter.
―How do you perceive the relationship between Alec and Curashia within “Lasting Period”?
Umeda-san: Alec and Curashia observe each other very calmly. They can accurately gauge each other’s strengths and understand what each person excels at. I think they have a relationship where they most deeply recognize each other’s true abilities. While everyone acknowledges each other, Alec and Curashia probably have the most “flat” and calmly understanding relationship regarding what they each possess.
Tazawa-san: From Curashia’s perspective, I’m not sure if “equal” is the right word for their relationship, but I do think that’s what defines Curashia and Alec.
Next Challenge: Cooking?! And Pick-Up Lines for Viewers!
―In the story, the characters “re-gather” and embark on new adventures. Is there anything you two have “re-started” recently or something you would “like to challenge again”?
Tazawa-san: I tend to get bored easily. I often start things and then stop. And once I stop, I usually just leave it that way, so I might not have many “re-starts.”
Umeda-san: That just means you’re gaining a variety of experiences, doesn’t it? Starting something versus not starting at all is completely different. Just creating various doors means you can open them again whenever you’re interested, which is wonderful.
Tazawa-san: The next thing I want to challenge is… “cooking!” I’ve actually wanted to do it for a long time but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Until now, I wasn’t particularly interested in cooking, but perhaps this is a good opportunity to try!
Umeda-san: What will be your memorable first dish?
Tazawa-san: What should I make… I want to eat *nikujaga* (meat and potato stew) or something like that!
―To our Anime!Anime! readers, could you give a “pick-up line” based on the line from the show, “Kimi no chikara ga hitsuyou nanda!” (I need your strength!)?
Tazawa-san: “Watching `Hojo Mahou` will make you happy!”
Umeda-san: Oh, that’s tough… “Will you join me, join Alec and his companions, on an adventure every week?”
