A special exhibition, “Betsucomi 55th ANNIV. BEYOND THE PAGE Suki, no Tsuzuki.” (which can be translated as “Betsucomi 55th ANNIV. BEYOND THE PAGE The Continuation of Love”), is currently underway at LUMINE 0 NEWoMan Shinjuku 5F in Tokyo. This captivating event celebrates the 55th anniversary of Shogakukan’s shojo manga magazine, “Betsucomi.” In commemoration of its opening, a sneak peek at some of the exhibition’s engaging content has been unveiled.

A Journey Through “Betsucomi”‘s Illustrious History

“Betsucomi” first launched in 1970 under the name “Bessatsu Shojo Comic” as a supplement to “Shojo Comic” magazine. It later rebranded to “Betsucomi” in 2002 and then to its current “Betsucomi” in 2006. This venerable shojo manga magazine has a proud history of publishing numerous works that transcend the boundaries of the genre, offering grand narratives and profound storytelling.

The “Betsucomi 55th ANNIV. BEYOND THE PAGE Suki, no Tsuzuki.” exhibition is a dedicated celebration of the magazine’s 55th anniversary. It invites visitors to immerse themselves in 55 years of cherished “love” through a dynamic blend of cutting-edge immersive video technology and rare original artwork displays. Expect to revisit masterpieces such as Hagio Moto’s Poe no Ichizoku, Yoshida Akimi’s BANANA FISH, and Tamura Yumi’s BASARA, among many others.

Upon entering the venue, guests are greeted by a colossal wide-screen theater, standing over 4 meters tall and stretching more than 20 meters wide.

Here, an original 35-minute video presentation brings to life iconic scenes from 16 carefully selected works. Beyond the aforementioned Poe no Ichizoku, BANANA FISH, and BASARA, the video also features highlights from Watanabe Taeko’s Kaze Hikaru, Obata Yuuki’s Bokura ga Ita, Ashihara Hinako’s Sunadokei, Sakurakouji Kanoko’s BLACK BIRD, Saitomi Kyousuke’s Dengeki Daisy, Izumi Kaneyoshi’s Joou no Hana, Usami Maki’s Kokoro・Botan, Konno Risa’s Mune ga Naru no wa Kimi no Sei, Sakurakouji Kanoko’s Seirou Opera, Hinachi Nao’s Fujiwara-kun wa Daitai Tadashii, Chiba Kozue’s 1/3 Sanbun no Ichi, Fujisawa Shizuki’s Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai., and Yoshinaga Yuu’s Shujin Koi Nikki.
