Konomi Suzuki Reflects on ‘Recollect’ as Re:Zero 4th Season OP – Interview

Konomi Suzuki, the voice behind multiple opening themes for the Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World anime series, sat down with Megami Magazine to discuss her latest single, “Recollect,” which serves as the opening theme for the series’ fourth season. The interview, featured in the magazine’s May 2026 issue, reveals the creative process behind the track, her collaboration with rapper and vocalist Ashnikko, and how Suzuki’s own journey mirrors that of protagonist Subaru.

A Mysterious Number for a Desert Setting

Suzuki revealed that the assignment for the fourth season OP was announced as a surprise. “I found out after a live show – they told me, ‘It’s decided! This lineup, and we’re doing a really cool song!’” she said. The collaboration with Ashnikko was also part of the surprise. Suzuki admitted she wasn’t familiar with Ashnikko’s music beforehand, but after listening, she became excited about the final result because it differed from her usual genres.

When asked how “Recollect” compares to previous Re:Zero OPs, Suzuki described it as a “labyrinth-like song.” She explained that the first season’s “Redo” was about fighting oneself, the second season’s “Realize” was a straightforward confrontation with enemies, and the third season’s “Reweave” reflected a heartwarming alliance with former rivals. “For the fourth season, the stage is a desert, so that mysterious feeling comes through in the sound,” she said.

The title “Recollect” also carries special meaning. Suzuki noted that during a film concert, she and series author Tappei Nagatsuki had joked that the next OP might be called “Remember.” But upon hearing “Recollect,” she felt it was a better fit. “ ‘Remember’ is a passive act of recalling, but ‘Recollect’ has a stronger sense of actively remembering or reclaiming something,” she explained.

Recording with Ashnikko and the Production Team

As with previous Re:Zero songs, “Recollect” was challenging to sing. “The Re:Zero songs are always too difficult, and this one was no exception,” Suzuki laughed. However, careful direction from composers Giga and TeddyLoid helped her improve dramatically. “I ended up not overthinking it, holding nothing back, and just going for it in the recording.”

The collaboration with Ashnikko brought new dimensions to the track. Suzuki recorded a pre-production version that was already strong, but after hearing Ashnikko’s playful vocal takes, she felt inspired to re-record the A-melody. “Ashnikko’s vocals feel like a spirit sprinkling magic powder on my singing,” Suzuki said. “Her energy buffed the song, and the mix of Japanese crispness and English smoothness gave it depth.”

Giga and TeddyLoid gave specific direction: “They told me to value the rests and bring out the coolness of singing in rhythm. So I sang with a sharp, slicing nuance rather than lingering on notes.” Suzuki also recalled a fun request from Giga: “He said, ‘Give us 100% Konomi Suzuki – powerful, emotional, wonderful!’ So I think this song has 100% of me, and also 100% of Ashnikko, Giga, and TeddyLoid.”

Musical Highlights and Live Performance

Suzuki pointed out that “Recollect” has a dynamic flow that mirrors Subaru’s “Return by Death” ability. “The tempo changes rapidly – it starts slow, then the chorus runs, the D-melody feels like a flickering flame where time stops, and then it explodes again at the end. I hope listeners notice that connection.”

She also promised a different performance style for live shows. “I already performed it at ANIMAX MUSIX 2026 OSAKA on March 7, and I think the audience was surprised. The performance conveys the story of the series, so I hope to perform it again elsewhere.”

Growing with Subaru Over a Decade

Reflecting on her career since “Redo” was released ten years ago, Suzuki acknowledged her growth as a singer. “At 19, my singing had a reckless energy. Over time, my voice gained weight and determination – experience shows in the singing, I think.” She sees a parallel with Subaru: “When I sang ‘Redo,’ I had just moved to Tokyo and was a rookie, much like Subaru at the start of his journey. Now, Subaru has gained allies and even gave a speech in the third season. Similarly, I’ve been entrusted with bigger roles at live events. We’ve been syncing up.”

When asked why Re:Zero is so beloved, Suzuki cited its unpredictability. “You can never let your guard down. Just when things seem peaceful, you get thrown off a cliff. That tension keeps everyone – the staff, cast, and me – constantly taking on new challenges. That’s the appeal.”

Upcoming Live and Final Message

Suzuki announced a one-man live titled “Anison Collection+” on November 7 at SGC HALL ARIAKE in Tokyo. “I intend to make this my last stage before my dream of performing at Nippon Budokan. I’ll definitely sing ‘Recollect,’ so don’t miss it.” She closed with a message to fans: “I’ve been running alongside Subaru for ten years. ‘Recollect’ is a song I made with the intention to win – please listen to it a lot. Let’s spread the word that both ‘Recollect’ and Re:Zero are the best!”
