New scene cuts from the TV anime Smoking Behind the Supermarket (スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり) have been released, offering a clear look at the distinct personalities of two key characters—who turn out to be the same person.
The manga began serialization on the original author Jinushi’s Twitter (now X) on March 9, 2022. The first episode accumulated over 2.8 million likes, sparking a major buzz. It is currently serialized in Monthly Big Gangan (published by Square Enix). The series won first place in the Web Manga category of the “Next Manga Award 2022,” and its compiled volumes have surpassed 3 million copies in print as of January 2026.
The story follows Sasaki (voiced by Satou Takuya) and Tayama, who share casual conversations at a smoking area behind a supermarket. Their relationship is difficult to define in a single word, but the series weaves an adult drama around them. Sasaki finds solace in the ever-smiling cashier Yamada (voiced by Hoshiki Seina) at Super S, while Tayama (also voiced by Hoshiki Seina) has a mysterious aura and suddenly invites Sasaki to the back of the supermarket. The surprising twist: Yamada and Tayama are the same person. Yamada is cheerful and bright in customer service, while Tayama is enigmatic, often teasing Sasaki yet acknowledging him as an important presence—a perfect duality.
Now, six new cuts have been unveiled that highlight the “before and after” of Yamada and Tayama. One set shows Yamada in her Super S uniform, serving customers with a refreshing smile. The other captures Tayama in a mode-style outfit, holding a cigarette with a cool demeanor. Both cuts are brimming with the unique charm of each persona. In the anime, Hoshiki Seina’s voice acting for the two characters has already become a talking point. Fans are eagerly awaiting the broadcast.
Additionally, a taxi advertisement spot has been released for the first time. The scene depicts Sasaki and Tayama’s exchange at the smoking area, set to the TV broadcast version’s ending theme “Fiction” by imase, creating a soothing atmosphere. The ad will run for one week starting June 29 on rear-seat tablets in taxis that can be called via the GO app across 36 prefectures nationwide. Keep an eye out when riding a taxi.
