Nihon Sangoku Episode 12 Delivers Shocking Cliffhanger: Fans Demand Season 2 Immediately

TV anime Nihon Sangoku aired its 12th and final episode of the season, titled “Seii Metsubou” (Holy Barbarian Extinction), on June 22, 2026. The episode delivered a relentless cascade of twists—a major character’s death, the introduction of new players, and a devastating cliffhanger that left viewers reeling. Social media erupted with praise and desperate calls for a second season.

Nihon Sangoku is based on the manga by Matsuki Ikka, serialized in Shogakukan’s MangaOne app and Ura Sunday website. Set in a near-future Japan shattered by nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance, the story follows Sankaku Seiki, a lowly local official who rises through wit and rhetoric to pursue the reunification of a nation split into three warring kingdoms. The manga has surpassed 1 million copies in cumulative circulation.

Directed by Terasawa Kazuaki and produced by Studio Kafka, the anime features a stellar cast including Ono Kensho as Sankaku Seiki, Fukuyama Jun as Asaba Hōkei, Seto Asami as Higashimachi Saki, and Pan Megumi as narrator.

Note: The following contains spoilers for episode 12.

The episode opened with a special version of the opening theme “Hibana” by Kitani Tatsuya, showing Hōkei delivering an imperial decree. Fans cheered, calling it a “special OP” and “too cool.” Voice actor Nakamura Yūichi, who plays Kakai Yasuaki, also tweeted his excitement.

As the Ryūmon army hesitated to retreat, Kakai appeared and convinced Ryūmon to pull back—but his visibly poor health worried fans. Hōkei was assigned the dangerous rearguard duty and gleefully accepted, prompting amused comments like “Tsune-chan-san is so excited” and “He’s the cutest.”

The Seii army, learning of the retreat, grew restless. Staff officer Kiura Yūsuke predicted a retreat via Echizen Province and Oda, but Ōtora suspected a feigned retreat. Yūsuke had considered that possibility, but he believed the real goal was to lure the Seii into a trap at Kanegasaki, where Hei Denki would annihilate them and strip Ryūmon of command. Viewers worried that the plan might be exposed.

The Seii knew that Fuji Sansei was a puppet of Hei, so they assumed the imperial decree was forced. Confident that no one but Hei could persuade the emperor, they were unaware of Seiki’s influence. Fans commented, “There was someone who could do it” and “Another sharp operator was there.”

Ōtora pursued the retreating Ryūmon army. Hōkei’s acrobatic headshot drew cheers from his fans. The Ryūmon army executed a plan to drop abandoned cars from a cliff onto the Seii forces, crushing Yūsuke and others who shielded Ōtora. The brutal scene left viewers shaken.

Then came the moment many dreaded. With a truce established, the Ryūmon army headed to Yamato, but Kakai suddenly coughed up blood. He entrusted his dream of a peaceful era to Seiki and Hōkei before collapsing. Fans mourned: “Kakai-san…” and “Too early…”

After the battle, the story shifted to the eastern kingdom of Buhō. Two new characters debuted: first Buhō emperor Hōjō Tōhō (CV: Ōtsuka Hōchū) and his prime minister and strategist Musashishu Jūrō (CV: Chō). Their eccentric speech—Tōhō using youth slang like “Sore ma?” and Jūrō only saying “memumemu…”—drew laughter. Also introduced was Ōkō Himehito, voiced by Ōtsuka Takeo (known for Aqua in Oshi no Ko and Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries), delighting fans.

Meanwhile, in Osaka, a funeral was held for soldiers killed in the western campaign. Fuji Sansei wept openly, earning widespread sympathy and boosting his popularity with viewers.

After peace talks, Yamato and Seii agreed to jointly govern Kaga Province. Seiki felt relieved, recalling his late wife Saki’s words that reunification was possible. But then shocking news arrived.

Ōtora was assassinated on his way back from the peace conference. Seiki and Hōkei were stunned. Social media erupted in shock. Seiki pondered and realized who was behind it.

Hei Denki appeared with a sinister smile, revealing he had orchestrated everything. He accused Ryūmon of negligence leading to Ōtora’s death, imprisoned Ryūmon, arrested Seiki and 34 other border guards, stripped Fuji Sansei of political power, nullified the agreement with Seii, and declared war. Fans raged: “Not this guy again!” and “This bald villain!”

Despite the setback, Hōkei reminded Seiki that he never gives up. In prison, Seiki’s eyes glowed with determination as he plotted to defeat Hei. The episode ended there.

After broadcast, author Matsuki Ikka posted an illustration, and main cast members including Fukuyama Jun, Tsuda Minami (Wajima Ōtora), and Pan Megumi shared their thoughts on social media.

Though viewers were shocked by the “protagonist imprisoned ending,” the finale was widely praised as “god-tier anime” and “breathtaking.” Calls for a second season are already overwhelming: “Season 2 within 2 seconds!” and “When is season 2?” With the spring 2026 season’s potential crown contender, all eyes are on what Nihon Sangoku will do next.
